A voyage through the Natural Encounters exhibit is like a journey through an entire continent. You can see animals from the river’s edge, rainforest canopy, coral reef & the desert all under one air-conditioned roof. Waterfalls flow into pools, tree branches stretch out over trails & animals meet you at every turn. Come up close with some of the world’s most endangered animals as you experience animals through great big glass viewing panes. You can even crawl right into a see-through tunnel to view piranhas inside their habitat. As you leave the building, watch meerkats glance out of their burrows while their sentry watches for predators as medical center helicopters fly overhead appearing like hawks to the animal.
Mealtime at The Houston Zoo
Every day, the Houston Zoo has more than 6,000 animals to feed. The Zoo’s Animal Nutrition staff begin work at 5 AM so they can have meals ready and distributed to the animal sections in time for breakfast. There is tons of activity in their building every day including thawing meats, chopping produce, sorting insects, and loading bales of hay and bags of grain to be delivered. Each animal receives adamant excellence in animal care including the best in nourishment. The dietary needs of the animals is as varied as the animals themselves. All animal diets are developed in consultation with a specialist in exotic animal nutrition and are regularly analyzed for nutrient composition in order to ensure the ideal health and welfare of the animals.
